How to change the options for defragmentation?

Submitted by Tech Talk on June 21, 2009 – 6:19 amNo Comment

Defragmenting a hard drive to Go can last several hours. To make it faster, you might want to defragment only a portion of the data. For example, if you are still using the same software on a PC without installing new, it would be preferable to defragment the files. Here’s how.

Start the Regedit utility that lets you edit the registry. Here, as for any manipulation of this, first perform a backup of it (see the corresponding form). Recall that a simple alteration inadequate the registry may prevent the computer from functioning.

Run Start / All Programs / Run and type Regedit.

Locate the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive.

Open subsection HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Applets

Create if necessary subsection Defrag (Edit, New, Key).

Create if necessary Subsection Setting.

Create the Method subkey.

Make a double click on the channel (by default) then enter one of the following in the Value data:

FILES to defragment only the files.

SPACE to defrag only free space.

FULLNOAPPLOG to defragment files and free space.

FULL to defragment files, free space and optimize programs.

Close Regedit and restart the computer.
